(Almost) 150 new data sets

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Uncategorized

You may have noticed that today was the launch of a new Government White Paper – Putting the Frontline First: Smarter Government. The Digital Engagement blog has the details but it has enabled us to announce some Open Data Principles we have been working on in the team:

Public data will be published in reusable, machine-readable form

  • Public data will be available and easy to find through a single easy to use online access point (http://www.data.gov.uk/)
  • Public data will be published using open standards and following the recommendations of the World Wide Web Consortium
  • Any 'raw' dataset will be re-presented in linked data form
  • More public data will be released under an open licence which enables free reuse, including commercial reuse
  • Data underlying the Government's own websites will be published in reusable form for others to use
  • Personal, classified, commercially sensitive and third-party data will continue to be protected

Given that there is such a strong theme of Open Data going through the document, we thought we should also put the next wave of data live at the same time. Thanks to a lot of hard work round from Departmental teams we have been able to put 150 146 new data sets live over the weekend. As usual the list includes excellent data like Car crime statistics and the Places database. However, there are also some gems we weren’t expecting like the English Channel Beam Trawl Survey.

How do we identify "new" datasets? I've looked for a "new" tag and tried searching for "new"....

    How about: data.gov.uk/newdata

or just a "first published" field.

    Thanks

It's going to be very interesting to see where it takes us...

I don't get the 'linking' part. I can only see links to websites where I can download the data myself? That's not particularly different from searching on the web... But I have the feeling that I'm missing out on something?

How about an A to Z index of the full dataset - or were you hoping we might tab our way through the 2,000+ items of the full list of datasets to find the name you've given to the info we want?

I know you've got a search enquiry - but do you know how many times data is named in ways which make little sense to non-civil servants?

It's a shame the full list of data sets is split over many web pages. Wouldn't it be appropriate, on this site especially, to offer it in a single csv, text or xml file?

Even a very long web page with the entire list in it would be good, and would allow us to download it and run our own searches, sorts etc.

Its good to see government adopting W3C standards to make the data more shareable.

Can we get all government in the world adopt W3C semantic web to publish data ?

Will it include 'Credit Ratings', 'Company Directors' or other such information?

Would be good to have a link to new (say last 7 days) datasets, and also maybe list the datasets in categories rather than just A-Z?

This is a brilliant project. It means that app developers can focus on their data domain whilst creating apps and not spend a lot of time negotiating access to other datasets.

I am really looking forward to see this project fly.
